After the Fact

When you are dying, the cable bill still comes and must be paid.

The grass will continue to grow and does not care one bit,

that you are breathing your last breaths.

It will need cutting and you will struggle with your checkbook

to pay the lawn service,

Your tremulous hands barely able to write out the words:

One Hundred And Fifty Seven And 0 over 100s,

from that you draw a weak and wavy line to the printed word ‘DOLLARS,’

at the end of the payment amount line. 

You learned to draw that line as a young man to insure that no additional

sums were added to your payment, after the fact.
